Are you a high school grad getting ready to go to college? Besides that fact that you will be moving to an entirely new place, and meeting entirely new people, you need to think about where you are going to move. Moving to a new place can be pretty hard. However, there are some things that you want to look for when you are searching for an apartment. There are lots of hidden dangers in an apartment, and it’s good to know of them before you rent an apartment that you will be living in.
1. Mold. Make sure that you check the apartment that you are interested in. Many people that rent rooms are ok if you ask to see the apartment before you make a decision. If there is mold in the apartment, this is not good news. Mold is usually found in bathrooms, closets, or basements. Check these places carefully. Mold is a horrible thing because it can trigger allergies or asthma.
2. Dust mites. These might be very hard to track because you can’t see these little critters with the naked eye. If you have lots of allergies, dust mites will only make them worse. These mites feed on dead skin from our bodies. They often hide in beds―be sure to check your bed―or at least wash it before you move in.
3. Carpet chemicals. When you first move in, check the chemicals that are being used to clean the carpets. Make sure that they are giving enough time for the chemicals to clean out. The smell isn’t great, and it will give you a headache because they are so strong.
4. Carbon monoxide. This is a colorless, odorless gas that can kill you. You might not even notice that it is in your apartment. This is very important to see if this is in your apartment.
5. Proper ventilation. Make sure that you have proper ventilation in your apartment. You need to check if the A/C and the heater is properly working. This is quite important to you especially if you have allergies. Check to see if they are working.
Although these things sound pretty scary, it’s good to know about them before you sign any contract. You want to make sure that the place you live in during college is save and free of anything harmful. Good luck in college, it’s a great time in your life.
