I just graduated college. There are so many things that I wish that my mom taught me before I went off to college. She isn’t a horrible mother or anything, there are just so many things that I was not prepared to face. These are things that I know that I will want to teach to my girls―if I have them one day. College is a very hard time for many girls, luckily, my mom was only a phone call away. It seems like I have bonded even more with my mom since coming out to college. Still, if you have a daughter that is getting ready for college, these are the things that I wish my mother had taught me.
1. Smart girls always win. When I got to college, I always thought that the slutty girls always won. They were the ones that were the prettiest, the ones that had the boys, the ones that seemed like they had the world in the palm of their hands. Fast forward 4 years, these girls are not even close to getting a career, and most of them have dropped out. I wish that I hadn’t of worried about these girls when I was in college, it wasn’t worth the energy.
2. Don’t read the magazines. When I was in college, I was constantly bombarded with images from the internet and magazines about how I was supposed to look. My mother always told me to love myself, but looking at all of these magazines, it was really hard to keep a positive self-image.
3. Don’t get married when you are very young. I had a lot of friends that got married with the first boy that they met in college, I was always jealous because I never seemed to met a man that would want to commit. This was always very frustrating because I wanted to find someone to marry. I wish that I had known that there was no rush to get married. I just went to a luncheon with a lot of my old college friends and the ones that are happiest are the ones that waited to get married.
4. It’s ok to laugh at yourself. When you are in college, you make a lot of mistakes. I wish that my mom had taught me to laugh at myself. I would get so stressed out about everything that I would get so mad at myself for messing up. Sometimes you just need to take a good look and laugh at yourself.
